There is only band that can rightfully claim to be Kings of Beer – German thrashers Tankard. Over the last 25-odd years, they’ve released album after album of solid beer-drinking classics – approximately one every two years. 2010 sees the release of Vol{l)ume 14 (yes, it’s their 14th full-length studio recording).
Watch the first video, Rules For Fools, below:
You can’t say they don’t have an awesome time doing what they do!
Check out one hit wonders of the early ‘90s, Cycle Sluts From Hell, with this week’s beer themed metal anthem I Wish You Were a Beer:
The video cannot be shown at the moment. Please try again later.
A quick search reveals that the Cycle Sluts got together for a one off show in 2006 and while not looking to reform, are open to “special shows here and there”.
It’s just as well… they were funny, but I’m not sure the world needs too many metal bands with four chick singers!
It seems the metal world is resplendent with quality homages to the wondrous elixir of life we call beer. Bands from all over the world are writing and performing numbers dedicated to this sweet bringer of hangovers.
Although not as well-known as other patrons of beer on this hallowed site, Rustbucket are a band from the Midlands in the UK who have written a concise and elegant hymn to the wonder of beer. The song opens with the winning lines:
‘It’s a Monday, I drink some beer. It’s a Tuesday, I drink some beer. It’s a Wednesday [can you see where this is going?] I drink some beer…’
Pete Laurie’s vocal style has a hint of the great Phil Anselmo about it and coupled with the chugging riffs from Nick Billingsley and Ivan Lewis, Rustbusket have given us a good old fashioned drinking song!
When we asked our Twitter friends what their favourite beer dinking songs were, we got two kinds of responses: songs about beer, and songs that are so good they just inspire beer-drinking.
We’ll leave the second type of song for next time, but today here’s some of the songs that were suggested that were about beer.
First up Korpiklaani, with Bring Us Pints of Beer – a song title that is instructional and very specific as well as kick-arse:
Actually, much of Korpiklaani’s material is about beer, but for now, how about a band that not only wrote songs about beer, but named their band for it too? I’m talking of course about ‘80s thrashers Tankard. Check out Commandments:
Did you catch the lyrics in the chorus? I reckon truer words were never spoken:
Life’s too short to waste your brew It’s plain to see-obey the rules
Thou shalt not waste and thou shalt not spill Just drink your beer — Commandments Thou shalt not puke cause there’s no excuse Just drink your beer – Commandments
Metalheads love beer, so it’s no surprise that there’s a huge number of songs about the mystical beverage. Here’s a favourite of mine that you might not have heard.
Claim The Throne are a battle metal band from Perth, Western Australia. Folk and Viking-inspired black/death metal might seem out of place in my sunny beach side home city, but trust me, it works – these guys are just so much fun.
So check out Set Sail On Ale – a great beer drinking song!
